Brown Varnish made the picture ‘invisible’
Of course it isn’t just grime – the varnish itself had discoloured too on this 200 year old painting.
When it came in the painting was covered in varnish which had turned dark brown leaving the outline of the picture barely visible and the details invisible.
After many hours of restoration the painting remains brown but you can clearly see the details of the original picture. After cleaning it up the painting has now been re-varnished to protect it for another hundred years.
