We were asked if we could help to clean up a suitcase.
As ever there is some risk in saying yes without seeing the item in question. But when we did see it we understood why the owner didn’t want to bring it in on spec. It isn’t a small suitcase – in fact it might well better fit under the definition of a travel trunk – a leather travel trunk.
Old things, beautiful things
If you like old things, beautiful things which have been and still can be useful then you would love this trunk. A lovely well made piece of luggage. While cleaning, polishing and refurbishing it we spent a few minutes considering where in the world it had traveled and whose clothes and valuables it had carried.
Better, smarter, cleaner – not new!
We have mentioned before the fine line that we sometimes walk when repairing and refurbishing old articles. The client is always asked how far they want us to go in removing or hiding the marks of age, wear and tear etc. We could have cleaned off every last scrap of the stickers on the trunk but, as is often the case, the owner didn’t want the piece to look new – just better, smarter, cleaner.
We think it does – do you?
