Who broke the ornament – decades ago

An amusing and touching story with this broken china bird ornament.

The broken gift

A 17 year old bought a beautiful china ornament for his mother before going off to war, to Singapore. When he returned 18 months later it had been broken and glued back together with “mendit” glue. No one admitted breaking it…to this day !

The repair process

Having found it at the back of a cupboard he wanted it putting right, now aged 84. He brought it into the shop and asked us to work our magic,

Firstly, we had to do something we rarely get to do – break something. In order to remove the ugly glue used in the amateur repair process we had to ‘take it apart again’.

The finished repair

He is going on a picnic with his siblings and will show them the the ornament professionally repaired by Gadsby’s. We wondered if one of them would own up after all this time…he will have the bill ready!

Now – will the guilty party own up?

Reunited with his repaired gift – the gentleman kindly gave his permission for us to use his story and all of the images including this one showing him holding the bird.
